Her mom’s a witch, her dad’s a demon and she just wants to be ordinary. But, when an insidious evil comes after her family, Sydlynn Hayle has to choose to be the normal girl she craves or step up, embrace her magic and save her coven from disaster.

Sydlynn Hayle's life couldn't be more complicated. Trying to please her coven, starting over in a new town, and fending off a bully cheerleader who hates her are just the beginning of her troubles. What to do when delicious football hero Brad Peters--boyfriend of her cheer nemesis--shows interest? If only the darkly yummy witch, Quaid Moromond, didn't make it so difficult for her to focus on fitting in with the normal kids. Add to that her crazy grandmother's constant escapes driving her family to the brink and Syd's between a rock and a coven site. Forced to take on power she doesn't want to protect a coven who blames her for everything, only she can save her family's magic. If her family's distrust doesn't destroy her first.

My So-Called Review:
When the invitation came along to read and review Family Magic for its upcoming blog tour I took one look at the cover and immediately signed up! I’m such a sucker for awesome covers and there was just something about this one that begged me to read it. I was looking to pick up some paperback review copies for our summer vacation in July and was thrilled when I saw they were available for this book, it’s so hard to find print review copies these days! I was even more pleased when I received the book in the mail because the cover looks even better in person.
Family Magic at its core is a beautiful coming of age story about a teenage girl who just wants to be normal and fit in. That describes the basic struggle for all teens which will make this story so relatable to its YA audience. The difference here is that our main character, Sydlynn Hayle isn’t a normal teen; she’s part demon, part witch. Having just moved to a new school where she doesn’t fit in Syd is an outcast and picked on by her peers. Her home and what should be her sanctuary is actually a place filled with conflict. Her mother, who’s also a witch, wants her to embrace her power and grow into the witch she’s meant to be. Her father is a demon and because of this isn’t home very much, usually only showing up to provide his much loved wife some much needed parental support. Syd has spent so much time trying to hide who she really is in an attempt to try and be “normal”. But when her family’s powerful coven is threatened by an evil force that’s bent on destruction, Syd must make a choice to finally embrace who she truly is.

Family Magic was the perfect pool side vacation read! You’ll find a little bit of everything within its pages; there’s magic, witches, demons, vampires, young romance, teen angst and family conflicts, just to name a few. I just loved Syd, she’s such a snarky little character but also possesses a deep, fierce love for her family. She honestly reminded me of my own teenage daughter which I’m sure is why I connected to her so much, she’s a great character! She’s not the only one though; Patti Larsen is a very talented writer who is brilliant at creating colorful, expertly crafted characters.

Family Magic is fun, witty and jam packed with originality, I can honestly say I’ve never read a witchy story quite like this J If you love YA books but are looking for something with a fresh take on the paranormal world then this is the book for you! I would absolutely recommend this to both teens and adults and I can’t wait to start reading Witch Hunt, book 2 in the series. I also found on Amazon that there’s a prequel to book 1 called Dreams and Echoes; I personally decided to read this one next and have already ordered my paperback copy!

Thank you so much to author, Patti Larsen and to CBB Book Promotions for inviting me to participate in the blog tour and for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!

About the Author:
About me, huh? Well, my official bio reads like this: Patti Larsen is an award-winning middle grade and young adult author with a passion for the paranormal. But that sounds so freaking formal, doesn’t it? I’m a storyteller who hears teenager’s voices so loud I have to write them down. I love sports, even though they don’t love me. I’ve dabbled in everything from improv theater to film making and writing TV shows, singing in an all girl band to running my own hair salon.

But always, always, writing books calls me home.
I’ve had my sights set on world literary domination for a while now. Which means getting my books out there, to you, my darling readers. It’s the coolest thing ever, this job of mine, being able to tell stories I love, only to see them all shiny and happy in your hands… thank you for reading.

As for the rest of it, I’m short (permanent), slightly round (changeable) and blonde (for ever and ever). I love to talk one on one about the deepest topics and can’t seem to stop seeing the big picture. I happily live on Prince Edward Island, Canada, home to Anne of Green Gables and the most beautiful red beaches in the world, with my very patient husband and five massive cats.
